How to Update AirPods Firmware (and Check Your Version)
AirPods update automatically, but sometimes they do not. Here is how to check the firmware version of AirPods, AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, force an update, and fix connection problems.
AirPods receive firmware updates that fix bugs, improve sound and connection, and add features (like hearing health or new gestures). There is no "Update" button: the update installs automatically when conditions are met. Here is how to check and encourage it.
Check the firmware version
- Connect the AirPods to the iPhone.
- Open Settings > tap the AirPods name at the top (or Settings > Bluetooth > (i)).
- Scroll to About: the Version is shown.
Compare it with the latest version listed by Apple on its AirPods firmware support page.
How to get the update to install
- Update the iPhone first: iOS 27.0.1.
- Put the AirPods in their charging case and close the lid.
- Connect the case to power.
- Keep the iPhone nearby, connected to Wi-Fi and the internet.
- Wait at least 30 minutes, ideally overnight. Then check the version again.
For AirPods Max, charge them and keep them near the iPhone.
On Mac, iPad or Android
AirPods can also update from a Mac or iPad with the latest system. Android phones cannot install AirPods firmware; borrow an iPhone or iPad if needed.
Update not installing
- Clean the case contacts and check the case charges (status light).
- Restart the iPhone.
- Reset the AirPods: in the case, lid open, hold the button on the back about 15 seconds until the light flashes amber then white, then pair again.
Connection or sound problems
Bluetooth not connecting, no sound on iPhone. Compare models: AirPods 5 vs AirPods 4.
