How to Install the tvOS 27 Beta on Apple TV (and Return to the Public Version)

The tvOS beta installs directly on Apple TV, no computer needed. Here is how to enroll, install the tvOS 27 beta, what to watch out for, and how to leave the beta.

Apple TV beta testing is simpler than on iPhone: the beta is installed directly from the Apple TV's settings. This guide covers tvOS 27, released alongside iOS 27.

Compatible Apple TV models

tvOS 27 runs on Apple TV 4K models and recent Apple TV HD units. Check your model on our Apple TV firmware page or with the Max OS Version tool.

Step 1: Enroll your Apple Account

Step 2: Turn on beta updates on the Apple TV

  1. Open Settings > System > Software Updates.
  2. Select Get Beta Updates (or Beta Updates) and choose the program.
  3. Choose Update Software and install the beta.

Keep the Apple TV plugged in and do not unplug it during the installation.

What to watch out for

  • Streaming apps (Netflix, YouTube, local TV apps) may have bugs on a beta.
  • HomePod and home hub features can behave differently if the Apple TV is your home hub. Avoid betas on the device that runs your home automation.

How to leave the beta

  1. In Settings > System > Software Updates, turn off beta updates.
  2. Wait for the next public tvOS version, which installs normally.
  3. To return immediately: on models with a USB-C service port (Apple TV HD), you can restore with a computer. On Apple TV 4K, which has no USB port, the option is Settings > System > Reset > Reset and Update, which installs the latest public version.

HomePod betas

HomePod software betas are controlled from the Home app on iPhone, and only for enrolled accounts. They cannot be removed by the user: you stay on the beta until the public version catches up. Only test it if you accept that.

Firmware

tvOS and audioOS (HomePod) firmware listings are available in beta firmware and on our device pages. Check signing with Signing Status.
