Sideloading Apps on iPhone Legally in 2026: AltStore, SideStore and EU Marketplaces Explained
You can install apps outside the App Store, legally, in some situations. Here is how AltStore, SideStore and EU alternative marketplaces work, and why 'tweaked' or cracked IPAs are risky.
Many iPhone users look for apps that are not in the App Store: emulators, open-source tools, apps from independent developers. It is possible in several legal ways. It is also an area full of risks, because many sites offer "tweaked" or cracked apps that contain malware or steal accounts. Here is a clear picture.
1. Alternative app marketplaces (European Union)
Since iOS 17.4, users in the European Union can install apps from alternative marketplaces approved by Apple, such as AltStore PAL. The apps are still checked by Apple for security (notarization). This only works if your Apple Account and your location are in an EU country.
2. AltStore Classic and SideStore (worldwide)
Outside the EU, AltStore Classic and SideStore use the free developer certificate attached to your own Apple Account to install apps (IPA files) that you provide. Limits:
- Apps must be refreshed every 7 days with a free Apple Account.
- A free account can only have a few sideloaded apps active at the same time.
- You need a computer (AltServer) for setup.
These tools are legitimate for apps you have the right to use: open-source apps, apps you develop, or apps published for free by their authors.
3. TestFlight
Many developers distribute beta versions through Apple's TestFlight app. It is the simplest and safest way to try apps before they are in the App Store.
4. Web apps
Some services are available as web apps: in Safari, tap Share > Add to Home Screen.
Why to avoid "tweaked", "++", "premium unlocked" or cracked IPAs
- They are illegal when they bypass payment for paid apps: it is software piracy.
- Security risk: modified apps can contain code that steals passwords, session tokens, WhatsApp or social media accounts.
- Account bans: services like Instagram, Snapchat or Spotify detect modified clients and can ban your account.
- Enterprise certificates used by some sites are frequently revoked: the apps suddenly stop opening.
If you already installed such apps, read how to remove malware from iPhone and signs your iPhone is hacked, and change your passwords.
Remove a configuration profile
Some sideloading sites ask you to install a "profile". Check Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and delete any profile you do not recognize.
The safest options in summary
| Method | Where | Safety |
|---|---|---|
| App Store | Worldwide | Highest |
| TestFlight | Worldwide | High |
| EU marketplaces (AltStore PAL…) | EU only | High (notarized) |
| AltStore Classic / SideStore | Worldwide | Depends on the IPA source |
| Cracked "tweaked" IPAs | — | Dangerous and illegal |
