iOS Beta Battery Drain: Why It Happens and 10 Ways to Fix It
Battery dropping fast after installing an iOS beta or a big update? Part of it is normal indexing, part is bugs. Here is what to expect and how to get your battery life back.
After installing an iOS beta, or even a major final update like iOS 27, many users see their battery drop much faster than before. It is one of the most common complaints. Some of it is temporary and normal, some of it comes from bugs that you can work around.
Why the battery drains after an update
- Indexing: for 24 to 72 hours, iOS re-indexes photos, messages, files and Spotlight. This uses the processor even when the screen is off.
- Downloads in the background: new Siri and Apple Intelligence models, voices and app updates.
- Beta bugs: processes that run too long, apps not yet optimized for the new version.
Rule of thumb: judge battery life only after three days of normal use, with the iPhone charged overnight on Wi-Fi.
10 fixes
1. Check which app is responsible
Settings > Battery: look at the list of apps by consumption over the last 24 hours and 10 days. An app with a lot of "background activity" is a suspect.
2. Update your apps
Developers release updates for new iOS versions. Open the App Store > profile > update all.
3. Limit Background App Refresh
Settings > General > Background App Refresh: turn it off for apps that do not need it.
4. Review Location Services
Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services: set rarely used apps to "Never" or "While Using".
5. Remove heavy widgets and Live Activities
Widgets that refresh often (weather, stocks, sports) use energy.
6. Reduce screen brightness and Always On
On iPhones with Always-On display, turn it off in Settings > Display & Brightness to test.
7. Use Low Power Mode temporarily
It limits background activity during the indexing period.
8. Restart the iPhone
A restart stops processes stuck in a loop.
9. Reset All Settings
Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings. Data stays.
10. Clean restore or leave the beta
If the drain continues after a week, restore the iPhone as new with an IPSW, or return to the public version: how to leave the iOS 27 beta. Remember that you need an archived backup made before the beta: how to archive a backup.
Check the battery health
Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Below 80%, a battery replacement will help more than any setting. More tips: 12 battery fixes.
Report the problem to Apple
On a beta, the Feedback app lets you report battery problems with diagnostic data. That is exactly what betas are for, and it helps get the bug fixed before the final release.
