macOS 27 Won't Install? Fix Mac Update Errors, Stuck Downloads and Not Enough Space
Your Mac does not show macOS 27, the download is stuck, or the installation fails? Here is how to check compatibility, free space and install macOS 27 safely.
macOS 27 brings new features to compatible Macs, but the update does not always go smoothly. Here are the most common problems and their fixes.
1. Is your Mac compatible?
Check the list: macOS 27 compatible Macs. If your Mac is not on it, macOS 27 will not appear in Software Update. You can check the newest version for your model with our Max OS Version tool.
2. The update does not appear
- Open System Settings > General > Software Update and click the (i) next to Automatic Updates to check settings.
- If a beta is selected in Beta Updates, set it to Off to see the public release.
- A company or school profile can delay updates: System Settings > General > Device Management.
3. Not enough free space
A major macOS upgrade can need 25 to 35 GB of free space. To free it:
- System Settings > General > Storage: review Recommendations, empty the Trash, delete old iPhone backups in "iOS Files".
- Move large videos and downloads to an external drive.
4. The download is stuck or very slow
- Use a wired or stable Wi-Fi connection; turn off VPN.
- Check Apple System Status for "macOS Software Update".
- Restart the Mac and try again.
5. "An error occurred while installing"
- Restart in Safe Mode (Apple silicon: hold the power button until startup options, select the disk, hold Shift and click "Continue in Safe Mode"; Intel: hold Shift at startup) and try the update again.
- Disconnect external drives and docks during installation.
- Run Disk Utility > First Aid on the startup disk.
6. Use the full installer
Instead of the incremental update, download the full "Install macOS 27" app from the Mac App Store and run it. This also lets you install on several Macs or create a bootable USB drive.
7. Install from macOS Recovery
- Apple silicon: hold the power button until "Loading startup options", choose Options, then Reinstall macOS.
- Intel: hold Command + R at startup (or Option + Command + R to get the latest compatible version).
Reinstalling macOS from Recovery keeps your files, but make a Time Machine backup first.
8. The Mac no longer starts after the update
A DFU revive from another Mac reinstalls the firmware without erasing data: revive or restore a Mac in DFU mode. Firmware files: Mac firmware.
Test before you upgrade
If you rely on specific professional apps, test macOS 27 on a separate volume first: install macOS on a separate volume.
