iPhone Storage Full? How to Clear "System Data" and Free Up Space

"iPhone Storage Full" and a huge grey "System Data" bar are among the most searched iPhone problems. Here is what System Data really is and 12 safe ways to free up gigabytes without losing your photos.

The message "iPhone Storage Full" usually appears at the worst moment: when you want to take a photo, install an update or receive a WhatsApp video. When you open the storage screen, you often discover a mysterious grey bar called System Data (formerly "Other") that takes 15, 20 or even 40 GB. This guide explains what is really using your space and how to get it back, step by step, without losing anything important.

Step 1: See what is using your storage

  1. Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
  2. Wait 30 seconds to a minute: the bar at the top is calculated progressively.
  3. Look at the colors: Apps, Photos, Media, Messages, iOS and System Data.
  4. Below, apps are sorted by size. Tap one to see the app size and its "Documents & Data".

Keep at least 5 to 10 GB free. Below that, iOS becomes slow, updates fail and the iPhone can even get stuck on the Apple logo (see iPhone stuck on Apple logo).

What is "System Data"?

System Data is not one file. It is a mix of:

  • Caches: temporary files from Safari, streaming apps (Netflix, YouTube, Spotify), social networks (TikTok, Instagram, Facebook) and Messages.
  • Logs and diagnostics that iOS keeps for a while.
  • Downloaded system resources: voices, fonts, dictionaries, Siri and Apple Intelligence models (several GB on compatible iPhones).
  • Update files that were downloaded but not installed.

It is normal for System Data to use 5 to 15 GB. iOS clears part of it automatically when space runs low. When it grows far beyond that, the steps below help.

12 ways to free up space

1. Restart the iPhone

It sounds too simple, but a restart lets iOS clear temporary files. Check iPhone Storage again after a few minutes; System Data often drops by several gigabytes.

2. Delete a pending iOS update

In the app list of iPhone Storage, look for an entry named "iOS 27.x". If you see one, tap it and choose Delete Update. You can download it again later, or install it from a computer with an IPSW file, which needs no free space on the iPhone (how to install an IPSW file).

3. Clear Safari data

Settings > Apps > Safari > Clear History and Website Data. This signs you out of websites but can free hundreds of megabytes.

4. Clear the cache of big apps

Many apps have their own "clear cache" option:

  • TikTok: Profile > menu > Settings and privacy > Free up space > Clear cache.
  • Telegram: Settings > Data and Storage > Storage Usage > Clear Cache.
  • Spotify, Netflix, YouTube: remove downloaded songs and episodes you have already watched.

If an app has no such option and its "Documents & Data" is huge, delete it and reinstall it from the App Store.

5. Clean up WhatsApp

WhatsApp is often the biggest consumer on phones in Africa and elsewhere. Open WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and Data > Manage Storage. Sort by size and delete large videos and forwarded files. Then turn off Save to Photos in Settings > Chats so every received photo is not stored twice.

6. Shorten Messages history

Settings > Apps > Messages > Keep Messages: choose 1 Year instead of Forever. In iPhone Storage > Messages, use Review Large Attachments to delete heavy videos.

7. Offload apps you rarely use

Settings > General > iPhone Storage > Offload Unused Apps. The app is removed but its data stays; tap its icon to reinstall it when needed.

8. Optimize photos with iCloud

If you use iCloud Photos, turn on Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Photos > Optimize iPhone Storage. Full-resolution originals stay in iCloud and the iPhone keeps lighter versions. Without iCloud, copy photos to a computer (Windows Photos app or Image Capture on Mac) before deleting them.

9. Empty "Recently Deleted"

Deleted photos stay 30 days in Photos > Albums > Recently Deleted. Empty it to really get the space back. Do the same in Files and Notes.

10. Remove downloaded voices and languages

Extra Siri voices, translation languages and offline maps can take gigabytes. Check Settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Voices and the Translate app.

11. Set the date forward trick? No

You may read that changing the date to the future clears System Data. It can force iOS to delete old caches, but it also breaks iCloud, messages and security certificates. We do not recommend it; the methods above are safer.

12. Back up and restore (last resort)

If System Data stays enormous (25 GB or more) after all of this, a backup and full restore is the only reliable fix. It rebuilds iOS from scratch and removes accumulated junk. Back up first (how to back up), then follow how to restore an iPhone with an IPSW file.

Frequently asked questions

Does buying iCloud storage free up iPhone storage?

Only for photos (with Optimize iPhone Storage) and iCloud Drive files. Apps, WhatsApp and System Data stay on the iPhone.

Why does System Data grow again after I clear it?

Caches refill as you use apps. That is normal. What matters is that iOS can release it when needed, which it does when at least a few gigabytes are free.

Can a full storage damage the iPhone?

Not physically, but it causes slowdowns, failed updates and, in extreme cases, boot loops. Keep a margin of free space.
