Apple keeps releasing security updates for iPhones that can no longer run the latest iOS. Here is which models get iOS 15.8.8, 16.7.16 and 18.7.9, and why you should install them.
On May 11, 2026, alongside iOS 26.5, Apple released three updates for older iPhones: iOS 15.8.8, iOS 16.7.16 and iOS 18.7.9. Many people are surprised that phones from 2015 still receive updates. Here is why, and which phones are concerned.
Major updates vs security updates
Each year, Apple releases a major version (iOS 26 in 2025, iOS 27 in 2026) for recent iPhones. Older models eventually stop receiving these major versions, because their processors cannot run the new features. But Apple often continues to fix serious security flaws on the last version they support. These updates bring no new features, only protection.
Which iPhone gets which update?
iOS 15.8.8
- iPhone 6s and 6s Plus
- iPhone 7 and 7 Plus
- iPhone SE (1st generation)
iOS 16.7.16
iOS 18.7.9
Since then, Apple may have released newer patches in each branch. Check the latest version on your device page or with our Max OS Version tool.
Why you should install them
- Older iPhones are frequent targets because many are used by people who do not update.
- Some of the flaws fixed in these branches had been exploited in real attacks.
- Banking, mobile money and messaging apps sometimes stop working on unpatched versions.
How to install
- Over the air: Settings > General > Software Update.
- From a computer: download the IPSW from your device page, connect the iPhone to Finder, the Apple Devices app or iTunes, and hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) while clicking Check for Update.

How long will support last?
Apple does not publish an end date. The iPhone 6s, released in 2015, has received updates for more than ten years. However, apps eventually drop support for old iOS versions. If your important apps no longer install, it is time to consider a newer model; an iPhone 11 or later can run iOS 27.
